All you need to enjoy your time  is warm clothing, sun protection, snacks to keep you energised, and a sense for adventure! If your not on the glacier this is the best way to enjoy this magnificent part of the world.  The bikes are available for 2, 4 or 8 hour hire.

Te Weheka Cycleway

5 km | Easy: Grade 2 | 40 min return

Enter the forest at the southern end of town then turn east after 400m to head into the Fox Glacier Valley. Ride through beautiful rain forest and gently climb up the track to a view of the largest active landslide in New Zealand.  

Southside Cycleway Glacier View

10 km | Easy: Grade 2 | 1.5 hour return

Follow the south bank of the Fox River through ancient podocarp rainforest crossing ancient glacial moraine surfaces. Ride to the old car park and then continue on foot gently downhill for 10 minutes to a viewpoint of Fox Glacier Te Moeka o Tuawe.

Lake Matheson 

11 km | Easy: Grade 2 | 2.5 hours return | Includes 1 km Walk to Lake Matheson Jetty View

Ride on a cycle track parallel to the road and through farmland to Lake Matheson Gift Shop. From here wander through ancient podocarp forests to the viewpoint for spectacular mountain views. The dark water stained by vegetation humus of Lake Matheson is the perfect canvas for reflections fringed by native foliage.

Te Kopikopiko o te Waka/Glacier Peak View Lookout

20 km | Easy: Grade 2 | 3 hours return

Follow the cycle track from Fox past the turn off to Lake Matheson and continue on Cook Flat Road for 2 km to the Te Kopikopiko o te Waka Lookout. There is a plane table that directs your line of sight and on a clear day you can pick out individual peaks on the Southern Alps including Mt Cook/Aoraki and Mt Tasman. Enjoy a picnic in the dedicated picnic area before returning to Fox Glacier Village.

Gillespie’s Beach

42 km | Easy: Grade 2 | 5 hours return

Head west towards the coast past the turn off to Lake Matheson for 8km then turn off to Gillespie’s beach and follow the road for 11km through beautiful untouched native forest to the wild West Coast beach where the Fox Glacier terminated into the Tasman Sea 11,000 years ago. Arrive to stunning views of the Southern Alps, an historic cemetery and coastal walks.
